Tucked away in a peaceful corner of the state, Altavista, VA embraces its small-town atmosphere, without sacrificing the entertainment and activities found in larger cities. Even though it’s hard to narrow our list, here are seven of our favorite things about living here.
7 of the Best Things About Living in Altavista VA
1. Best of Both Worlds
Our small population means that we have the welcoming environment of small-town America, but we also aren’t totally isolated. U.S. Route 29 runs along the north edge of town, meaning we’re only minutes away from hopping onto the expressway and heading for a day trip to the nearby cities of Lynchburg and Danville.
2. Nature in Your Backyard
Meanwhile, on the other side of town, we’ve got the beautiful Roanoke River. The river is always the perfect place for a canoeing adventure, an afternoon of fishing, or simply just reconnecting with nature. We also love spending the day with friends at English Park and enjoying the walking trail, picnic area, and playground.
3. The Trade Lot Tradition
Everyone knows that the first Saturday of the month means it’s time for the Trade Lot! For the past seventy years, the town has come together every month to buy and sell used items, crafts, antiques, and farm-fresh food. It’s a great time to visit with neighbors and there are always treasures to be found!
4. Uncle Billy’s Day Festival
Of course, we can’t mention the Trade Lot without talking about Uncle Billy’s Day! The annual festival is named after Uncle Billy Lane, one of the most dedicated people involved in the early days of the Trade Lot. During the first weekend in June, the community shows up for a massive Trade Lot, as well as live music, a craft show, and stunning fireworks to kick off the summer.
5. The Avoca Museum
No place shows our connection with history more than the beautiful Avoca Museum. The building hosts Civil War era pieces in the Campbell County Gallery and artifacts from the Juliet Fauntleroy Native American Collection. Even if you aren’t a history buff, it’s hard not to be wowed by the restored Victorian architecture of the building.
6. Good Eats
We may be a small town, but that doesn’t mean we lack delicious dining! In only a couple of minutes, you can drive to over a dozen restaurants that serve a variety of cuisine. Whether you’re craving Italian, Chinese, Mexican, or Southern cuisine, you’re sure to find something that hits the spot!
7. Antiques and Crafts Galore
To see the heart of our community, just step inside one of the antique and craft shops in town. Places like MAD Biddy’s and The Shoppes of Altavista feature rustic decor, work by local artists, and antiques that reflect the talent and history of our home.
There is so much to love about our beautiful town. When it comes down to it, we wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. Visit Discovery Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram to find your next vehicle today and experience the friendly and welcoming service our community is known for!
